Nadam Fair

  "Nadam" is a transliteration from Mongolian, which not only means "entertainment, games" but can also express the joy of a bumper harvest.

  The Nadam Fair is an annual traditional sports event with distinct ethnic characteristics among the Mongolian people in Inner Mongolia, Gansu, Qinghai, and Xinjiang of China.

  In the past, large-scale sacrificial activities were held during the Nadam Fair. Lamas would burn incense, light lamps, chant scriptures and praise the Buddha, praying for the protection of the gods to eliminate disasters and misfortunes.

  Nowadays, the contents of the Nadam Fair mainly include traditional ethnic events such as wrestling, horse racing, archery, sabu (a Mongolian sport), horse lassoing, and Mongolian chess. In some places, there are also sports competitions like track and field, tug-of-war, volleyball, and basketball.

  In addition, there are wonderful performances at the Nadam Fair, such as martial arts, polo, horseback archery, horseback chopping, horse race walking, horseback skill sports, and motorcycle shows.
